about authority

Authority is a pet food brand made for PetSmart, a US pet retailer founded in 1986. It is now North America's largest specialty pet chain with more than 1,500 retail stores.

PetSmart introduced the Authority brand in 1995. Compared to other PetSmart brands, Authority is not as generic as Grreat Choice or something like Granola likesimply nourish. It caters to anyone looking for food expertly formulated and backed by science. Looks like a trademarkHill's Science Diät.

Supply and Manufacturing

The authority says all of its products are made in the US using local and imported ingredients. The agency does not name its manufacturing partners, but a 2016 report suggests they work with several manufacturers, including American Nutrition, Inc in Ogden, Utah.

Has Authority Cat Food been recalled?

Authorized cat food was recalled in March 2007 due to melamine contamination. Like many other companies this year, the Authority manufacturer received melamine-contaminated ingredients from China, prompting it to withdraw numerous varieties of dog and cat food from the market.

Fortunately, this is the only recall in the brand's nearly thirty-year history. The Authority has had no product recalls in the past 15 years.

What types of cat food does the Authority offer?

The Authority offers about 50 different dry and wet cat food recipes. They offer both traditional cat food and recipes designed to support specific aspects of health such as weight management and digestion.

  • Well-being in everyday life- The Authority's largest line, Everyday Wellness, includes a range of specific foods for kittens, adult and senior cats, as well as recipes for domestic cats.
  • no grains– These foods are made without corn, wheat, and soy or other grain-based ingredients.
  • advanced wellness- This range of wet and dry foods addresses specific health concerns including hairball control, weight management, skin and coat health and digestion.

Most dry and wet foods contain grains like rice. There is a limited choice of grain-free foods, mostly wet food formulas.

Authority Foods serves a competency-oriented customer. Each calm blue or silver package depicts the Authority's partnership with the Healthy Pet Advisory Council™, an advisory team of veterinarians, animal nutritionists and researchers. Chicken appears to be the main source of protein in this dry cat food.

This food from the Authority Solutions line promises to solve two problems at once - hairball and obesity.

It is enriched with additional fiber from cellulose powder and dried beet pulp. Some believe that fiber helps keep cats lean and satisfied, as well as helping to improve digestion and reduce hairballs.

In addition to all this fiber, the feed contains proteins of animal and vegetable origin. Boneless Chicken and Chicken Meal top the list of ingredients, while Corn Protein Concentrate and Ground Corn appear a few slots later. Brewer's rice appears to be the main source of carbohydrates and another source of fiber. This rice milling by-product is minimally nutritious and certainly not necessary for your meat-eating cat.

The kibble contains chicken fat as the primary source of fat, plus a touch of fish oil further down the ingredient list. It is enriched with synthetic vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Contains L-carnitine, an amino acid that can help burn fat.

Overall, this food is moderate in protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

With lots of grains and low-calorie fiber, this food is definitely great for weight loss, but it's not exactly a carnivore's dream. A more appropriate alternative for weight loss is a diet rich in moisture and protein.

The food contains 3307 kcal/kg or about 288 kcal/cup.

Chicken appears to be the main source of protein in this dry cat food.

Part of the Authority's Everyday Health range, this dry food is designed for indoor cats. It is a standard dry food that combines boneless chicken, chicken and turkey meal as primary protein sources, with additional protein from dried egg.

The food contains a blend of high-carb grains, such as corn, with low-carb beer rice, which feature prominently on the ingredient list. Corn protein concentrate is added as a vegetable protein source.

This dry food formula contains a blend of chicken fat and salmon oil as the only sources of added fat. With their high bioavailability and ideal fatty acid profiles, these animal fats are ideal for cats.

The feed does not contain any artificial additives. Instead, you get a flavor boost from "natural flavoring," an ingredient typically made from hydrolyzed animal tissue. It is enriched with synthetic vitamins, minerals and amino acids.

Overall, this dry food is moderate in protein, moderate in fat and high in carbohydrates..

Although a few steps ahead of the colorful and artificially flavored grocery store kibble, this food is your regular highly dry plant food. It doesn't stand out as particularly good or exceptionally bad compared to other dry foods.

The food contains 3763 kcal/kg or about 371 kcal/cup.

#3Authority Everyday Health Indoor Cat Chicken Entree Wet Food Review

Chicken appears to be the main source of protein in this wet cat food.

This canned pie from The Authority focuses on chicken as its main source of protein, with chicken, chicken broth and chicken liver leading the ingredient list.

The diet also includes oceanic whitefish, a loose name for a variety of species including tilefish and other whitefish. Since we don't know much about the identity or origin of this ingredient, it's difficult to guess its mercury content or nutritional value. The feed contains dried egg as a final source of animal protein.

While this is a low-carb, meat-based food by most standards, the recipe isn't rice flour, a minimally nutritious by-product. It also contains ground flaxseed and guar gum as a stabilizing agent. In addition to the usual nutritional supplements, the kibble contains a touch of brewer's yeast as a source of B vitamins.

Overall, this food is high in protein, moderate in fat, and low in carbohydrates.

Even the touch of rice, this meal is like an upgrade.Friskiespie. Instead of animal by-products, it contains clearly identified pieces of muscle meat and liver. Instead of carrageenan, it is made with guar gum. Instead of artificial colors and flavors, this authority pate chooses to keep things natural.

The food contains 1028 kcal/kg or about 160 kcal per 5.5-ounce can.

Ingredients

Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Sea Fish, Beer Rice, Dried Egg, Guar Gum, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Menhaden Fish Oil, Taurine, Choline Chloride, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Thiamine, Niacin Supplement, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Folic Acid), Brewer's Yeast, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Oxide Zinc, Copper Proteinate, Potassium Iodide, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite)

What do customers think of Authority Cat Food?

Authoritative Cat Food receives mixed reviews.

While limited, most reviews for Chewy and PetSmart are positive. Customers say they and their cats enjoyed the food. However, once you get past the retail ratings, you'll read about some negative experiences, including illness after eating Authority or pets that simply refused to eat it.

See what some Authority customers have to say about their experiences.

positive comments

“My cat loves this food. She has been on Authority her whole life but switched to hairballs and weight management for about 9 months due to frequent hairballs. She is a medium hair cheetah and I have noticed a decrease in hairballs within a month. I would definitely recommend this or just hairball control to anyone with a medium or long haired cat.”

“My cats really liked this food. I have six cats aged 13 years and 8 months and after Triumph changed their formula I was really excited to find this food. I buy three boxes of groceries a month, so quality groceries at an affordable price mean a lot to me. I hope and pray they don't change this food!” Mary, Review of Authority Daily Health for Cats at Home Wet Food Chicken Starter

negative comments

"I have 7 indoor/outdoor cats and none of them would eat this food. This was the first kibble they all turned down. Every morning I would normally have to fill their dishes with kibble and this particular kibble is completely full in their dishes. I don't would buy this food again."

“I was excited to try a new food, 2 of my cats are picky eaters. My regular brand is expensive and I was eager to save money. One of my cats ate this, the others didn't. In fact, sticking with my regular brand found them expensive.

How much is Authority cat food?

Authority is a cheap brand. Their groceries range from approx.$0.17 to $0.27 per ouncewith dry food being the cheapest option. Feeding a 10-pound cat would cost aboutUS$0.40 to US$1.86 per day.

How does Authority compare to other brands? Authority dry food is comparable to sister brand PetSmartsimply nourish, but their wet formulas are much cheaper in comparison, occupying the same price range as lower-end brandsunusual festivalEFriskies.

Overall, is the authority a good choice?

Could it be. If you want to give it a try, start with Authority wet foods, which are low-carb foods made with lots of clearly labeled meat and no artificial ingredients. Their canned selection is like high-quality Friskies or Fancy Feast at an unbeatable price.

Authority dry foods are a little better than other foods at the same price point, but there's nothing particularly exciting about it. Considering this brand hasn't been remembered since 2007 and hasn't generated any significant controversy, it seems like a relatively safe and reliable choice.
