7 Best Bison Dog Foods: The Best Buffalo Meat For Your Pooch! (2023)

Best Buffalo Dog Food: Quick Picks

  • Taste of the wild high prairie[Cheapest Option] While Taste of the Wild is still a sophisticated dog food, it's one of the most affordable buffalo foods on our list. High in protein and free from grains, corn, wheat, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.
  • Blue Buffalo Rocky Mountain[More Protein] It contains Bison, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal and Fish Meal as the first 4 ingredients for a very impressive animal protein composition. No poultry meal, corn, wheat, soy, artificial flavors or preservatives.
  • Great Plains Earthborn Holistic Fest[Buffalo as a single protein] Earthborn was the only recipe to feature buffalo as the only animal protein (all others contain buffalo and other meat), making it a great choice for dogs that don't digest common animal proteins very well.

Bison is a rather unusual source of protein that you don't see every day. I'll admit I've never tried it (although I certainly will after reading about it all morning).

But its novelty is actually a relatively recent phenomenon –Native Americans of the Midwestern plains have relied on buffalo meat to feed their people for centuries. The largest native animal in North America, the bison, was originally quite numerous, with herds numbering in the hundreds of thousands.

Unfortunately, European colonization and subsequent westward expansion drastically reduced their numbers (and shot more than could be carried in the Oregon Trail video game).

Over a 100-year period, European settlers slaughtered nearly 50 million animals, reducing their total population to one yearseveral hundred.

Fortunately, conservationists have helped restore these populations to semi-healthy levels, and today about half a million live on farms and reserves.

Their numbers are sufficiently healthyThey can be used as a food source for humans and dogs, and what a wonderful food source!

Below, we explain the benefits of bison feed in detail and dive deep into various options.

bison or buffalo? A quick note on language

The terms bison and buffalo are used almost synonymously in general usage. However,The terms refer to two completely different animals. This is a common occurrence and is one of the reasons biologists refer to animals by their scientific names.

For example, the American bison is easyBison Bison. On the other hand, the domestic buffalo is known asBubalus bubalis. In fact, there are five different living species of buffalo and two different species of bison (one American and one European).

Currently, dog food manufacturers seem to be using the terms "bison" and "buffalo" interchangeably. In fact, they probably try to use both terms to avoid losing customers searching for either name. So I wouldn't worry too much about this issue.

However, water buffalo are also used as meat. Water buffalo doesn't typically find its way into US-made products very often, but it canchange in the future. And while beef is also a very good source of protein compared to beef, it's a completely different protein and you should always be aware of what you're feeding your dog.

Nothing to worry about for now, but it's still nice to have on your radar.

In the future I will use the terms interchangeably, but please be aware that by everything I say I mean this animal:

Why should you feed your bison dog?

Bison closely resembles beef, which is considered a healthy protein for dogs. In fact, bison is often referred to as "the other red meat." However, there are some key differences that make bison preferable to beef in some respects.

For example,Bison is leaner than beef. One cut of prime beef has over 18 grams of fat per 3.5 ounce serving (I'm getting hungry...). In comparison, a similar serving of bison contains only 2.42 grams of fat. Additionally,Bison contains slightly more protein per ounce than beef, become a big oneHigh protein puppy foodSelection.

But wait, there's more:Bison also has less fat per ounce than chicken, pork, or sockeye salmon.. So not only is it a good alternative to beef; Bison is a good protein in its own right!

Because relatively few dog foods contain bison, often provides a new source of protein for dogs allergic to beef, chicken, and other common proteins. Perhaps not surprisingly, bison is the main protein used in several proteinsLimited ingredient dog food.

Qualities to look for in a bison-based dog food

Choosing a dog food is never easy, but there are a number of characteristics that can help determine the relative quality of a particular food.

When deciding to change your dog's food, consider the following characteristics that most good foods possess or exhibit:

Good dog food is made in countries with strict food safety guidelines and good hygiene practices.Food made in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia or Western Europe is less likely to contain unhealthy or hazardous ingredients than food made elsewhere.

Good dog food usually does not contain artificial colours, flavors or additives. Artificial additives - especially colors and dyes - are often suspected of triggering food allergies. Therefore, it is best to avoid foods that contain them. And in a world full of flavors and natural ingredients, why would you want a food that uses artificial versions of those flavors?

Good dog food contains whole protein as the first ingredient..Your dog is an omnivore, but meat is arguably the most important part of their diet. Therefore, good dog food should contain a whole protein (no by-product or meat meal) as the first ingredient. In this case, that ingredient must be bison meat.

Good dog food contains only meat meal and properly identified by-products.Many people totally dislike meat dishes and meat by-products, but there is nothing fundamentally wrong with these ingredients as long as they are safely made and clearly labelled. This ensures that your dog only gets healthy, nutrient-dense food from quality sources. Bison Meal is a perfect find; It's not "meatmeal".

Good dog food is fortified with vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients.Your dog needs a variety of vitamins and minerals to stay healthy, and things like antioxidants and omega fatty acids are also beneficial for most dogs. Look for foods fortified with these and other ingredients.

Switch your dog to a new food

You don't want to make an abrupt change in your dog's diet. While some dogs tolerate these types of risks well, others can sufferstomach pain, diarrhea and a general feeling of being unwell if you have to switch to a new food too quickly.

Therefore, most authorities recommend gradually changing your dog's food over a period of about a week.

First, mix about 10-20% of your dog's new food with his old food. If your dog seems to be tolerating it well and has no intestinal discomfort, increase the amount of new food to 30-40% over a day or two.

Continue slowly increasing the proportion of new food (and decreasing the proportion of old food) until you can give up the old food altogether.
